An MRI showing a disc bulge is frightening, but imaging findings often do not match symptoms. Many people with normal, pain-free backs also show disc changes on scan.
Conservative care — decompression, directional exercise, and gradual loading — resolves the majority of herniations within eight to twelve weeks.
Surgery becomes the right answer when there is progressive weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or unbearable pain that has not responded to a proper trial of therapy.
