Preventing Falls in Elderly Parents: A Home Checklist

One fall can end an older person's independence. These simple home changes prevent most of them.

Falls are the leading cause of fracture and long-term disability in older adults, and most happen inside the home rather than outside it.

Remove loose rugs, add night lighting between the bed and bathroom, and install a grab bar next to the toilet and shower. These three changes alone cut risk dramatically.

Strength and balance training matters more than any equipment. Sit-to-stand practice, heel raises and supported single-leg standing rebuild the reflexes that catch a stumble.

If your parent has fallen twice in a year, request a physiotherapy balance assessment — it is far cheaper than treating a hip fracture.
